When I lived in Illinois, in the United States, I was surprised to see people lying on the grass, playing with children and dogs, and throwing boomerangs whenever the sun came out during the summer.
I found this great appreciation for the sun amazing, yet at the same time, a bit baffling.
I come from a Brazilian city so sunny that people say there is "a sun for everyone". The sun visits practically every day of the year; cold weather and rain are virtually non-existent.
Because I had grown up with the sun, I initially found it very strange to see people celebrating and soaking up the sunshine when I first arrived there in the meddle of summer. However, as winter set in and the years went by, I came to fully understand the behavior of the people of Illinois.
Drawing an analogy to my own life: after going through my own harshest winter, I also came to understand the importance of cherishing life's little "suns" like coffee with friends, a family trip, or looking a child play.
Today, I never miss a party or any kind of celebration, no matter how small. In fact, I look for a reason to celebrate and give thanks in any simple, joyful moment- just as my friends in Illinois delighted in the summer by lying on the lawn of the University of Illinois quad.
