Of all the titles and honors one may have received throughout this life, nothing compares to the title of being the mother of a child we saw born, helped grow, educated, and loved.
This love is so valuable and profound that it is non-negotiable. To have our children always physically with us, we would face any kind of risk, easily give up material wealth, and even trade our health and parts of our bodies if such a trade were possible.
Every child is unique and an irreplaceable divine gift. Seeing a child leave prematurely identifies us with the pain Mary felt when she saw her son on the cross. Having to overcome the pain of living without the physical presence of such a beloved being brings us closer to Jesus himself, who conquered death after the suffering of the cross.
This love that we cultivate forever for our children is intangible and of inestimable value. Proof of this is that our angels today are at the center of our lives and will never cease to be. So profound and inexplicable is the love of mothers for their children that it transcends the here and now, for it is forever.
We feel the loss of our departed children, and they appear in dreams and inexplicable manifestations that transcend the material.
These manifestations that we receive prove God's love for us. He, who is all love, understands our love and thus rewards and offers us comfort by making these links real through signs that we keep in the vault of our soul.
For José Saramago, "A child is a being that has been lent to us for an intensive course on how to love someone beyond ourselves." Therefore, we never lose our loves since they are, in fact, a wonderful loan from God, who lives forever within us.
