This word, saudade, in Portuguese, has a very special, broad and deep meaning. Saudade translates well an equally special, broad and deep feeling.
Other languages do not have words that can capture this breadth and diversity of feelings that saudade represents.
Saudade is a word translated into English as longing. But longing is desire, anhelo in Spanish, désir in French. In English, saudade is also translated as nostalgia. But nostalgia is homesickness. Saudade can also be translated as yearning which is also a burning desire or missing that is lost.
Saudade, the word spoken in all Portuguese-speaking countries, represents all this together and much more.
Saudade is the desire to see again, it's a burning desire to have it again, it's missing, it's feeling lost because you lose it, it's wanting everything back, it's feeling your heart bleed, it's suffering and crying.
Even so, despite everything, having saudade means that it was so good that it shouldn't, nor can it end. That's why there comes the saudade, which represents gratitude for having lived and the desire to relive.
Several famous Brazilian songs talk about saudade: “Chega de saudade”, by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, “Saudade de minha terra” (Goiá/Belmonte), “Ainda ontem chorei de saudade ” (Moacyr Franco)... And there is a famous one, sung by Roberto Carlos that says: `...you are the saudade I like to have...`.
It would be good not to have saudade because you only have saudade of what has passed and you didn't want to! But saudade rescues the past and brings it to the present. That's why it's good to have saudade of an eternal love.
